2020-21 Global Scholar Clarice Cross

District 6580 selected IU graduate Clarice Cross for its 2020-21 Global Grant Scholarship.

The $40,000 award helped fund Clarice’s pursuit of a Master’s degree in Community Economic Development from Waseda University in Tokyo, graduating in September 2021.

Clarice was endorsed by the Bloomington North Rotary Club and chosen by a team of 10 Rotarians from clubs in the district.

Scholars must present a plan of study and a career commitment that align with one of The Rotary Foundation’s six areas of focus. Clarice’s area of focus is “Economic and Community Development.”

As an Indiana University junior, Clarice worked as a communications intern at the U.S.-Japan Council in Washington D.C.  Also, she participated in a “Tomodachi” (friends) leadership program in Chicago where she worked with diplomats and executives of companies with strong partnerships between Japan and the U.S.  Later, she participated in a U.S. Embassy-sponsored program called the ALLI Indo-Pacific Summit. That included workshops and panel discussions with delegates from 16  countries in the region.

During her year as a Rotary global scholar, Clarice was hosted by the Rotary Club of Tokyo Tamagawa.

After graduating from Waseda, Clarice plans to gain more experience in non-governmental organization management, continuing to work on community projects in developing countries.

Clarice, who majored in journalism and East Asian languages at Indiana University, also wants to work with foreign governments on policy issues that would improve the lives of every citizen no matter how small or poor the country may be.
